Centro ECOMAR-UAGro carries out protection, conservation, and research activities in collaboration with riverside communities in the state of Guerrero, focusing on critically endangered East Pacific leatherbacks. They are now pioneering a program involving local fishermen from the community of Barra de Tecoanapa and its surroundings to teach them the ecological importance of sea turtles in fisheries.

By involving fishers and community members in activities such as beach cleanups, workshops, and sea turtle nest monitoring Centro ECOMAR-UAGro hopes to foster a connection between people and turtles and gradually reduce the illegal consumption of eggs and meat that exists in the area.
