Ternate Island, home to key turtle nesting beaches like Tobololo and Kastela, faces serious threats due to poor maintenance, frequent disturbances, and rampant plastic pollution. Nesting turtles are often disrupted, and their eggs are illegally harvested, further endangering local populations. To combat these issues, a dedicated project is launching a multimedia educational and awareness campaign targeting schools, universities, and the general public. Elementary students will engage with turtle-themed coloring and learning sheets, while older students can participate in essay writing and poster competitions. Fact sheets, mass media articles, and an informational website will further amplify conservation efforts.
Beyond education, the project will take direct action by organizing beach cleanups and installing trash bins at nesting sites. Discussions, seminars, and focus groups will engage stakeholders, including fishers and coastal communities, to foster long-term support for turtle conservation. The Marine Science Department, experienced in similar initiatives across North Maluku, will lead efforts to create educational materials, conduct community discussions, and publish conservation updates. This initiative aims to create lasting awareness and tangible improvements for Ternate’s turtle populations and their habitats.
