Sea Turtle, Inc. (2024)
Sea Turtle Inc. is dedicated to protecting the critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, one of the few species that nest in the U.S. However, beach driving under the Texas Open Beaches Act poses a significant threat to nesting turtles and their eggs. To mitigate this risk, all discovered nests are relocated to a protected hatchery. In June 2024, tropical storm Alberto caused devastating high tides and flooding, leading to the loss of over 4,000 eggs and reducing the season’s hatch rate to just 37%, a drastic decline from the typical 85%. Recognizing the increasing threats posed by climate change, Sea Turtle Inc. has committed to rebuilding a stronger hatchery with reinforced fencing designed to withstand the harsh coastal environment, ensuring the protection of future Kemp’s ridley nests.
The hatchery is a focal point for both conservation and community engagement. Every year, thousands of locals and tourists gather to witness hatchling releases, with many planning vacations around the events. These releases serve as powerful conservation tools, inspiring people to protect sea turtles and their habitats. In 2023, Sea Turtle Inc. reached over 8.4 million people via social media, expanding its conservation message worldwide. The newly rebuilt hatchery will not only enhance nest protection but also ensure that this vital education and outreach continue for years to come.
