Our project focuses on collaborating with riverside fishermen in the Afro-descendant community of Punta Maldonado to promote sea turtle conservation. By involving them in activities such as beach clean-ups and reducing the illegal consumption of turtle eggs and meat, we aim to protect nesting sea turtles, with a particular emphasis on the growing leatherback turtle population. Additionally, we provide environmental education workshops to the local population, strengthening awareness and encouraging sustainable practices. Through a partnership with Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Inwater Research Group of Florida, we offer the “International Ambassadors of Sea Turtles” program, fostering global conservation awareness.
To further our impact, we will conduct workshops for fishermen and community members to address threats such as ghost fishing nets and illegal harvesting. Schools will also receive educational sessions to instill conservation values in younger generations. Beach clean-ups will help reduce solid waste and create a safer environment for sea turtles. The requested funds will support the purchase of materials for clean-ups and workshops, fuel for transportation to the community, and food and lodging for the work team. Through these efforts, we aim to build a long-term conservation culture in Punta Maldonado that ensures the protection of sea turtles and their habitats.
