With a total area of 1.2 million ha, Anambas is the second-largest Marine Protected Area in Indonesia, and, due to the continuing decline of the turtle populations, it was listed as a priority site for sea turtle conservation in the 2022-2024 National Action Plan. Despite this, the lack of law enforcement to address illegal take, resources, and baseline data on sea turtle population and ecology, have proven obstacles to creating effective conservation management in the MPA.

To address this, Anambas Foundation aims to combine socio-ecological information and community engagement as part of sea turtle conservation efforts in Anambas. By conducting sea turtle monitoring programs and promoting community-based conservation, they hope to create a holistic and long-term solution to sea turtle population decline in the area.
