Data Entry Instructions: Field Definitions

  Nesting Beach Data
YEAR: The year at the beginning of the nesting season. Ex: The nesting season extends from Nov 2007 - March 2008. The year reported should be 2007.
SPECIES: Scientific name of the species that the data represent.
COUNTRY: Country in which the beach is physically located.
REGIONAL ORGANIZATION: Any Regional Organization with which this beach and data are associated. Ex: WIDECAST, MEDASSET, IOSEA, etc.
BEACH NAME: Name of the beach.
BEACH LOCATION Latitude and longitude of the center of the beach (both monitored and unmonitored sections). Remember, you can use the map to select a location.
TAGGED INDIVIDUALS: Number of unique females tagged and counted for the given year.
CLUTCHES/ NESTS: Number of clutches (successful oviposition events) laid by nesting females – also known as “true” crawls.
CRAWLS: Number of crawls and emergences counted on the beach, including “false" crawls but with no double counts.
EXACT COUNT: If the exact number of females/clutches/crawls is known or has been estimated using a reputable method, please report it here and provide documentation of the methodology. Use “0” if nesting has been known to occur in the past but did not occur this year – zeros are just as important as any other count!
BINNED COUNT: If the number of females/clutches/crawls is not known but can be roughly estimated/reported, use one of the bins provided to help us standardize the database. Use “Unquantified” for a beach that is known to have nesting, but has not been quantified in any way for this year.
ESTIMATE METHOD: If any of your reported counts, exact or binned, are estimates, please provide a brief description of the method used to generate the estimate (please provide relevant citations).
NESTING SEASON AT BEACH: Start and end periods for the nesting season at the beach for the species being reported. The choices for dates are in two-week intervals. If nesting is year-round, please enter Jan 1-15 and Dec 16-31 as start and end periods, respectively.
MONITORING START/END DATES: The day, month, and year in which you started and finished monitoring the beach: enter as MM/DD/YYYY.
BEACH LENGTH: Physical length of the beach in kilometers – both monitored and unmonitored sections.
DATA CITIATION/SOURCE: Please give the full text of how this data should be cited in the SWOT report/database. Example: Ekanayake, E. M. L., Ranawana, K. B., Kapurusinghe, T., Premakumara, M. G. C., and M. M. Saman. 2002. Marine turtle conservation in Rekawa turtle rookery in southern Sri Lanka. Ceylon Journal of Science (Biological Science) 30:79-88.
